Chart success emancipates Mariah Carey's career

Pop diva Mariah Carey, whose career had appeared in permanent decline in recent years, staged a stunning comeback this week, when her new album debuted at number one across the United States.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" sold 404,000 copies, besting Carey's previous first-week opening sales record of 323,000 copies for 1999's "Rainbow"  and ending the six-week, chart-topping reign of rapper 50 Cent's "The Massacre."

Advertised as "the return of the voice," the album's success looks set to revive a career that once seemed invincible before a series of professional and personal disasters sent it onto freefall.

"Emancipation" is the first collection of original songs Carey has delivered since 2002's tepidly received "Charmbracelet." And it is packed with her trademark power ballads and collaborations with hip-hop heavyweights such as Nelly, Snoop Dogg and Kanye West.

Carey's path to superstardom began after she famously slipped a demo tape to future Sony Entertainment CEO Tommy Mottola at a party when she was 18.

Mottola became her mentor and later her husband, and her career soared.

The couple divorced in 1998, but Carey's star power remained undimmed and, in 2000, she signed a record-breaking five-year contract with EMI Group that made her 117 million dollars.

The problems began when she embarked on her first lead actress role in the rags-to-riches movie "Glitter," which was pilloried by critics and tanked at the box office.

In July 2001, Carey was hospitalized for exhaustion, and the failures of the film and its soundtrack led to a second hospital stay that September.

In January 2002, EMI terminated her record deal with a 28-million-dollar payoff.

"The Emancipation of Mimi" was released on the Island Def Jam label, owned by Universal.
