Sarah Brightman is the oldest of 6
children. She grew up near London. At the age of 18, she scored her first
hit single "I Lost My Heart To a Starship Trooper".
Later, she played in the original cast of
Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber`s CATS. Together with Placido Domingo she
sang in Webber´s classical composition REQUIEM. Webber
created the role of Christine in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA especially
for Sarah Brightman, which she performed in London and New York.
After the end of her marriage to Andrew
Lloyd Webber, Sarah decided to leave her mother country and moved to the
USA. It is there where she met Frank Peterson who became her
producer. Together they put together her first solo album DIVE in
1993 which was followed by her second album FLY in 1996.
In 1997, her duet with the Italian tenor
Andrea Bocelli TIME TO SAY GOODBYE became the highest and fastest
selling single of all times in Germany and subsequently became an
international success. TIMELESS, her third solo album was released
in 1997. 21 gold and platinum album awards punctuate the success of
more than 3 million albums sold worldwide. The hit single TIME TO SAY
GOODBYE sold 5 million copies worldwide.
Sarah Brightman´s musical style, a mix of
classic and pop, represents an entirely new musical genre. Music - and
this includes her own - became a matter of the heart for Sarah: "I sing
the kind of music that I love. If I was to be untrue to myself it would
not work. You have to express what comes from deep inside yourself. The
audience notices any kind of betrayal."
Sarah´s fourth solo album EDEN formed
the basis of her first tour production. Her show ONE NIGHT IN EDEN
premiered in South Africa in March 1999. More than 2 million copies
of EDEN were sold worldwide.
With her fifth album LA LUNA, which
was released in April 2000, Sarah Brightman continued her creative work.
Her incomparable mix of classical and pop music will again formed the
basis for exciting and often surprising interpretations.
On November 20th 2001, Classics was
released. This new CD was a compilation album featuring 8 of Sarah’s more
classical-oriented songs from her last three album and new selection from
Sarah’s personal favorite classical pieces from different classical
composers such as Schubert, Chopin and Rachmaninov, to name a few.
Early 2003 saw the birth of a new musical path for Sarah Brightman. Her
latest CD, Harem, is a fusion of classical sounds with Middle
Eastern traditional instruments and ethnic voices. Sarah took an active
writing role in this album. The title track of Harem is an
adaptation of “Canção do Mar,” a classic from Portugal’s fado
tradition. Sarah Brightman’s imagination drives a new sound for such
classic hits - ranging from “What a Wonderful World” to “Stranger
in Paradise” - all bathed in the Eastern atmosphere.
